hey guys/gals, just picked up a 67 corona and was wondering what engine is the 1900 and how i can i.d. it with out looking at vin tags.

On the block, in front of the distributor (wipe the oil off the block), the engine number should start with 3R followed by the serial number. The 1965-67 Coronas used the 3RB engine (no air pump), and the 1968-70 Corinas used the 3RC engines (with air pump, which may have been removed by now).

hey, thank you very much carlyn. so can i use a 3rc engine with my 3rb transmission or are the bell housings diferent?

If your engine serial number is 3R-500001 or more, the 3RC will work fine. Below that serial number, part of the bell housing was cast as part of the engine block. So to use the earlier transmissions with the later blocks requires an adapter 31011-36010.
If you want a factory remanufactured 3RC engine, there should be one on the shelf ready to ship at RAM engines in Spokane, WA, 800-233-6934. Ask for Ken because most of the other people will have no idea that a 3RC engine is on the shelf or know anything about pricing. Figure about $2000 which includes a warranty, and there will be a core charge. The engine on the shelf is mine (I supplied the core, parts, and paid RAM for the labor).

ok, heres another question, by upgrading to a 3rc, what would i benifit? i have a 70 or so corolla 2 dr that is totaled but supposedly has the 3rc and i know it has a five spd.

There is no benefit to changing to a 3RC from a 3RB other than it it on the shelf. A corolla would not normally have a 3RC engine, more likely a 'K' or 'T' series engine.

hey, i'm learning quite a bit here. like i said all this stuff is new to me. i'm actually a datsun guy trying to broaden my horizons.
i have 14 datsuns right now, some with engine modifications, some with bigger engines and some as parts donors. have a couple full on customs too. although all are projects. so when it comes to this corona, i've always liked the body, but if i'm going to fix her up, i like my power too. this is why i ask all these questions. i prefer bolt in(or very little welding) over heavy modification when it comes to engine swaps. so i say thank you for being patient and thank you for the answers.
are there any engines in the toyota realm that have been dropped into these little cars that seem to fit fairly well and are worth the buck/power?

I specialize mainly in parts and technical information for stock restorations. There are others who have tried various other engines like the 18RC, 18RG, 20R, etc. that will have to answer your questions on non-stock engine and transmission options.

I have an 18rg in my 68 and it's awesome. I think the 22r is the best conversion for the 66-70 corona because it's easy and cheap. The upside is that so many toyotas came with the 22r that the parts are easy to find and upgrade to drag level if you wanted to go that route. I love my 18rg but have to be careful when racing. Parts for that motor are scarce.
