1. On the automatics, I have found that you need to set the idle speed on the high side to keep it from dying when you put it into drive.
2. The adjusting screw towards the engine is the idle mixture adjust screw. With the idle speed screw (the bottom screw) set so the car just idles, adjust the mixture screw for best (smoothest) idle.
3. After adjusting the idle mixture, use the idle speed screw to set the idle speed typically starting about 650 or so, and adjust so that the engine does not die when you shift to drive. 4. With a high idle speed, you may 'diesel' when you turn the engine off. One solution is to leave the transmission in drive so the torque convert drag will stop the dieseling. 5. If you engine wants to die when you accelerate, remove the air cleaner so you can see down into the primary side (towards the engine) & check to see that you get a steady stream of gas from the accelerator pump jet when you open the throttle. If there is no stream of gas, remove the top of the carburetor & check the accelerator pump (it has a leather boot).
I have carburetor kits and the gasket between the top of the carburetor & the air cleaner if needed.
