The following are things to consider if you are thinking about rebuilding your 3RB or 3RC engine.
The two failure modes that I have seen with the 3R# engines are (1) the top of a piston will break off, and (2) the fiber timing gear will crack in a circle around the metal that press fits on the camshaft.
I believe that the stock color of the engine (block, head, plate at rear of head, pan, steel side covers) was black on the Corona and gold on the Stout. The valve cover, the timing cover, and aluminum side covers on the earlier engines should be glass beaded and clear coated. Add a new decal (3R, 3RB, 3RC, 5R are all in stock) to the valve cover before cover coating.
For those that want a factory remanufactured engine with a warranty, figure $2000 + shipping & core charges, contact RAM Engines in Spokane, WA, 800-233-6934 and talk to Jack or Greg Bunton (the owner or his son) or to Ken McGuire in the shop.
Generally oil pumps are OK but they need to be disassembled, cleaned (carburetor cleaner works), checked per the specs in engine manual, and, if OK, reassembled with a new gasket. In many full gasket sets, the supplied oil pump gasket is too thick. Make sure the gasket is very thin, about 0.05mm to 0.10mm (0.002" to 0.004"). New oil pumps are difficult to find but I have a few without the screen $119.50, and maybe one with the screen $151.25..

The 01 & 02 kits include a refurbished valve cover (that has been blasted, has a new decal, has been clear coated, has a replated ventilation tube, new grommet & has tube mounting hardware), includes nuts & washers for top of the valve cover, includes bolts for the plate at rear of the head, includes bolts & washers to mount timing cover, includes bolts & cup washers for push rod covers, includes bolts for oil pan to block & oil plug, includes refurbished oil dip stick for those with dip stick tube in side of pan, includes the water drain thingy, and the ventilator tube s/a used with the PCV.
The 03 & 04 kits delete the refurbished valve cover but add the decal, replanted ventilation tube, and associated hardware for those that want to blast & refurbish their own valve cover.
