I'm starting this thread because the 20R engine was used in various Toyota models from about 1973 to 1980. This thread can serve as a place for owners of different model Toyotas to discuss issues with their 20R engines.

I have a 20R in my 79 Corona. I believe it is a reman engine, and not original. Nevertheless, this car has under 83K miles on the odometer. I have been doing repairs for some time now on various systems. Right now I'm replacing the starter. It is not factory, but a TEC aftermarket direct-drive type. I want to install a gear-reduction starter and wonder if anyone has done it and had any problems. I plan to order this starter today or tomorrow and get it installed as soon as it arrives. Send me an email on this please. I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out what the 'R' terminal was. I took my starter off, it doesn't have one. Apparently cars with electronic ignitions don't have these. This terminal is a ballast resistor bypass and is suppose to supply +12V to the coil during start for easier starting. See here www.powermastermotorsports.com/faq-starter.htmlI've been having problems with the factory Aisan carb as well, and rebuilt it. Still had problems with vacuum leaks and rough or erratic idle. So I decided to replace it with a Redline Weber 32/26 DGAV carb kit (W746). Until I replace the starter I won't be able to test the new carburetor. Such is life and frustration with old car ownership.

Hey 79 Corona, I have one also. is an 5 speed in LE trim.Of coarse is RT134 chassis.Purchased July,2005 from 93 year old retired Army mechanic. He bought it new for his wife and only sold it to me cause she got Oldheimers. Is(was) very clean by Ohio standards(salted roads).I qualified last sentence (was),as I dismantled body in & out to get at rust that was rearing it's ugly head. Was limited to front fender's wheel wells, door's lower strip and rear quarter wheel wells .Since no body parts easily sourced, had to weld patches and light coats of Duraglass & Icing. Have had it w/ 20R,think I could push it faster,so am doing radical swap.Dropping in 1UZ-FE from 1994 Lexus LS400.Engine displaces 4.0L & is V8.For present time am using the LS 4 speed auto till get $ for more HP(See www.1UZFE site) as i am loosely following his build. Question: Do you know if 85-88 Cressida brakes will swap in to our car? Take it easy, Rick(aka) ricksgrey89t

Good to hear from someone around here. I have a minor head gasket leak. The only sign is some coolant leaking out the left side of the head gasket. I believe that there is otherwise insignificant or no leak unless it really heats up, which it did once yesterday. I was sitting at the Hardee's drive-thru and suddenly noticed the needle was much higher than usual. I also had the AC running. After I got going again it sputtered a bit for several miles until it cooled back down and then ran normally. BTW, the needle never hit red, it was just much higher than usual. This could have caused the head to warp just enough to allow a little coolant into the cylinder(s). Has anyone ever tried the Thermagasket product?
