I'm having the rear end differential gear set rebuilt right now, and I got some bad news from the shop. A lot of my gear faces are badly pitted from rusting, and really should be replaced if I want it to be reliable and run quiet. I might be able to use a later model gear set that will require using a different housing, but the exact gear set needed is not available. So I'm hoping someone has a rear end that they won't be needing. Open to trades too. I have an extra engine (for parts only) and many other extra parts. I only really need the 'third member' assembly that bolts into the rear axle housing, not the whole axle. I'm also not sure if this rear end was use in anything else. It's 8", 4.88:1.

I think if I'm going to switch to a different gear set (which I'm assuming the 4runner is different), then my local shop guy can supply it. At least at this point in the hunt I'm hoping to scare up the exact match. Stay tuned...

Has your axle been swapped out for a newer one or do stouts use 8 in diffs?8in 4.88s came in later model trucks and runners with auto transmisions and 31 in tires.I also have a stout rear but don't know the gearing.I can pull it if you think may help you.

I believe what I have is original stuff. The shape or the housing and how many external ribs it has matches the parts diagrams. I've seen pix of the '79 and up stuff, which looks slightly different on the outside. Another issue is the axle splines. Even though they are all 8" 4.88, that might be different. Thanks, but don't do anything yet. I'll let you know if I want to go that route. BTW, found this great page: home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/#rear

This is also a good site for additional information: www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.htmlI found this site and a few others when I was looking at changing rear ends. I believe that all Stouts that were shipped to the U.S. were 4.88:1, as I have not found anything to indicate otherwise. I would also venture that it was a common gear set for HiLux through '78. Where did you find the paint code on the rear?

There is a 66 Stout in a yard in Redding California that I have pulled many parts off of. I am pretty sure it still has the rear end on it, you might call them. The place is called Gustaufins. I am pretty sure that is misspelled but info for Redding should be able to give you the number. Let me know if that doesn't work out. I may have another option.

I pulled the drive shaft and the end of the pinion has the code,it still looks new under there.I found Toyota kept some things the same as did in early land cruiser days and so on.
