Since the law changed in June that allows me to use a YOM plate on my 1966 Stout, I have been looking for some new, old plates. As I understand the law, I have to get truck plates for that were actually put on trucks in 1966. Unfortunatly, I cannot find a list of starting letters for truck plates for 1966.
Does anybody know what starting letters were used in 1966 or where I could find out?

Not sure on this, but I did look. Are you looking for a commercial truck plate? I guess that makes a difference. Here is a website that looks like they specialize in this? www.oldpl8s.com/faqs.htm

Thanks. I had already seen this site. It gives good info but not what years truck Licenses were used. For the "1963" plates trucks had a letter followed by 5 numbers. Commercial vehicles had five numbers followed by a letter. I'm looking for truck plates.

I did a quick search on Ebay, there are a few 1963 plates available for sale.
There are ones with the 3 letters followed by 3 numbers There are ones with 5 numbers followed by a letter And there is one plate with 1 letter followed by 5 numbers item# 190341292439
There are also plates with 2 letters followed by 4 numbers.

So I "talked" to a seller on Ebay and he assures me that the California used U, V, W, X in 1966 depending on where the truck was registered.
Thanks
3 letter, 3 number plates were used on passenger cars and the 2 letter, 4 number plates were for trailers.

Here is a good site for CA plate info: www.calpl8s.com/california/commercial.htmlAlso here's a very recent guide of the YOM program: reviews.ebay.com/California-YOM-1963-69-license-plate-registration_W0QQugidZ10000000005181578As far as I can find out, you have to go in with a set of plates that they have no record of, aka 'DMV clear'. I don't think they are hassling anyone for trying to register a plate issued in 64 on a 67, or anything that crazy, just that you have the black '63 series' plate, and you vehicle is form 63-69 (of course all of this is true for older than 63 too and the gold plates). I just got a set of commercial plates (required for pickups) off ebay, but I think they are from 69 or 70. Hopefully I'll get through.

Thanks for the update. I have heard both sides of this and my reading of the law clears nothing up. Mostly I would like to have the correct year if possible.
