So I suppose I need to start stockpiling some knowledge on these beauties if I plan on owning one for any length of time. Anyways, here's a few questions that snagged my interest as I was thinking it over... -Ignition: Single-points or Dual-points? Any E.I. upgrades? Does it have a Ballast Resistor? -Choke: Manual or electric? -Emergency Brake: Is this a *Jake-Brake? I looked at a few of La Mesa stouts albums and it looked like a Jake-Brake set-up (Locks the transmission, not the rear-end) *(Do I have my terms mixed up here??) -Carb: Please tell me it's at least a dual-throat and not a single...? And if it is dual will a 32/36 Weber fit this intake, or can one be adapted? -Windshield wipers: Electric or vacuum powered? -What vehicles came with this same (or comparable) engine/trans/drivetrain? What's the engine "code/name"? -Any 5-speed transmission upgrades that will work with the column shift? (wishful thinking?) -Biggest "problem area's"? (Rust, timing, electrical, brakes or...?) -Timing chain or belt? Timed off of which piston? (How are they numbered?) -What's up with the 60/40 Bench split?? ------------------------------------------------------------- None of these area's will prevent me from buying a Stout when I find one, alot of these questions were merely posted because of me being curious; and I just want to have an idea of what spare parts I should be carrying with me for those 'little' "on the road" fixes we all love. Thanks very much!! DESPERATELY SEEKING STOUT(s)!!!!!

- Single point. No ballast. Working on an HEI upgrade currently. Runs drives etc, but working on correct timing / advance etc. Point gap is .016 +/-.002, and there is an octane selector on the distributor that allows you to adjust to the type of fuel you are running. (it has a clear plastic cap on it)
-Choke: Manual or electric? Manual. Also there is a "Throttle" cable.
-Emergency Brake: Is this a *Jake-Brake? I looked at a few of La Mesa stouts albums and it looked like a Jake-Brake set-up (Locks the transmission, not the rear-end) *(Do I have my terms mixed up here??) - Jake brake is a decompression mechanism on diesel engines. It is used to slow down the engine, gasoline/carb units use the vacuum to decelerate the engine
-Carb: Please tell me it's at least a dual-throat and not a single...? And if it is dual will a 32/36 Weber fit this intake, or can one be adapted? - 2 Barrel down draft. There should be weber adapters for the 3R. In fact if you look around the Corona posts you'll find more answers.
-Windshield wipers: Electric or vacuum powered? Electric The motor is just above the steering column.
-What vehicles came with this same (or comparable) engine/trans/drive train? What's the engine "code/name"? Not sure of other vehicles, probably Corona, it is the 3R, there is a B and a C and the difference is emissions.
-Any 5-speed transmission upgrades that will work with the column shift? (wishful thinking?) No, not that I am aware of. The Stout is slow (max 75 mph). 1st gear is: 4.497 2nd is 2.734 3rd is 1.552 4th is 1.000 Reverse 4.497 The rear end is 4.88:1.
-Biggest "problem area's"? (Rust, timing, electrical, brakes or...?). Brakes are drum all the way around, can be problematic, but I haven't had an issue. If you're not used to armstrong steering, it can be quite a learning curve. All in all the truck was known for it's reliability, I bought my truck without hearing it run, and within a day I had it moving around.
-Timing chain or belt? Timed off of which piston? (How are they numbered?) Chain and I believe they have phenolic gears. Which can be a problem if they go out. Someone else will probably elaborate. Firing order is 1-2-4-3, timed off #1. There is a pointer on the timing cover, and a bump and a line on the crankshaft pulley.
-What's up with the 60/40 Bench split?? Utilitarian. Love the space underneath for storage.
