Hi, I'm a new member of your forum. Thanks for the great website and information posted. Kudos to whoever is responsible. I'm on my 4th Toyota, this is the first one I'll be tricking out, the others were just "never say die" transportation cars. Still kicking myself for selling my 1970 HiLux pick up. That one would have been fun to restore.
Just picked up a well used (260K miles) 1980 Celica with a 20R motor. I'm Looking for tips on how to keep it, make it, look very stock (although I would really like to find louvers for all 3 back windows), but I want it to perform like a bat out of *%^&*. I was thinking of a turbo, but it's carburated. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to our Forum. Hop on over to the Celica Board - hopefully some of the guys there can help you out!

How much $$ are you willing to spend on the motor? There are a number of mods you can do but it may not pass smog. Generally, most folks start with intake and exhaust mods like new carburation and a header and free flow exhaust. Even simple mods like these probably won't pass the visual inspection for smog though - even though the car may actually run "cleaner" than stock.
Even w/out forced induction, you can get a 20/22r motor close to 200hp. It won't be cheap though. PM me if you want more info.

I'm willing to shell out about 1-1.5K in the next six month for performance, and 500 to 1K for maintenance type issues. Anything more than that and I may need to wait. I know how to pick through junk yards pretty well, and as far as I can tell, this motor was widely used in theToyota line, in the P/U, 4Runners, ..... I believe it is all the same, more or less.
I don't know what "PM" is, sorry, this is my first forum.

PM means private message. A set of sidedrafts and a header will probably suck up most of that $1500. You could go with like maybe a Weber downdraft or Holley setup, mild cam and header.
Checkout www.lcengineerring.com. They know their 20/22r stuff well. Feel free to email me at koobreez@hotmail.com if you want to talk in more detail also.
