A big HELLO! to all TORC members. I look forward to participating in and learning all things Toyota with you.
My name is Robert and I'm new to the site, however I've had Toyota in my blood from childhood.
I've inherited a 1973 Toyota Corolla SL Coupe in white. I don't know much about the car so any help from anyone will help me a great deal.
My father purchased the car 'used' in 1973 from a young Doctor. I can't remember the full story, only that said Doctor had purchased it brand new from the dealer just two weeks earlier then suddenly found himself having to emigrate and for whatever reason could not take the car with him. My imagination has toyed with the 'why' for years, but I do remember that one day whilst playing behind the steering wheel (in the garage) and being fasinated by all the switches and gauges that I came to the realisation he must have been a secret agent returning the vehicle after a mission. What did that make my dad? HaHa. Oh to be that age again.
Anyway, the car had only done a few hundred miles when my father purchased it and now has about 20000 on the clock. My father didn't drive it much and most of the miles were put on either taking us to and from school or just taking it in and out of the garage to wash and polish it. Saying that, it has stood in the garage for a few years now not used. It is showing a little rust but nothing serious and is basically solid and with a little work will clean up nicely.
The interior is excellent. The door cards still have the protective delivery polythene sheets in place and my mother put seat covers on all seats from day one.
I believe the engine is a 1.2 and has twin carburetors along with a four speed gearbox, plus it is rear wheel drive.
If anyone can give me an idea of model numbers or anything that will help me look up more about it I would really appreciate the help.
I don't know if there is much interest in classic Japanese cars so I need suggestions as to what to do.
I would really like to keep it and drive it as I think it actually looks rather gracefull and nothing like cars today.
Is it worth restoring to a reasonable original condition or should I not bother and just sell it if it isn't worth anything and would just be a waste of money? I have seen a few pictures of similar cars with wheel arch extensions and bigger wheels and engines that look quite spectacular and are very sporty looking.
I will try and post some pictures as soon as I can but in the mean time any help and suggestions would be much appeciated.
Thank you in advance and hope to hear from some owners of similar cars.
