What is TORC?

The Toyota Owner's and Restorer's Club, established in 1995, is an organization aimed at the enthusiast of all Toyota automobiles. While TORC welcomes owners, drivers, and enthusiasts of all Toyota brands, including Lexus & Scion, the primary directive of TORC is to promote the preservation, restoration, modification & use of pre-1985 Toyota models. The clubs goal is to promote and encourage an appreciation of Toyota, it's heritage, and it's future. Whether you are interested in finding that hard-to-find Toyota part for your classic, have a technical question about a restoration modification project, or just want to browse the pages or see the pictures, we're sure you'll find something of interest.
(The club is a lot of things to a lot of people, and a lot of people call us by a different name... Tee Oh Are See ~ yes, those are the clubs initials spelled out, but the correct way is to just say it as one word = TORC. But no matter how you say it , one thing is for certain, we all love our Toyotas old or new!)
The Club Changes in 2005
The 10th Annual All Toyotafest, held on May 14, 2005, was a great success. We had over 250 registered vehicles in attendance. Everyone at TORC would like to thank all the great people that participated, from the volunteers & sponsors, to the spectators. The support & interest that we saw during the 2005 Toyotafest shows us that the passion for Toyota continues to grow! Beginning early in 2005 the Southern California Toyota Dealers Association acknowledged their heritage in the form of local television commercials and billboards that featured TORC members! And all this is due to the hard efforts of our dedicated staff. We can definitely say that our first ten years have been quite a success & that we look forward to the next ten years & beyond!
It is with this success and the growing interest in 'vintage' Toyotas, that we have decided to make some changes to the way TORC is delivered to its members. Regretfully, one change will affect those members that don't have an Internet connection, and the biggest change will be to our membership policy. As of the summer of 2005 we have put an end to our paid membership and to the newsletter. Instead, we will concentrate on improving our website and forum, as this seems to be where our greatest opportunity to grow is, & reach more 'old school' Toyota enthusiasts.
While we know there will be some disappointed members out there, we have decided to make these changes for the benefit of the club as a whole. There are a number of reasons for these changes, but we won't go into them here. If anyone wants to know more or voice their opinions, they are welcome to contact us at directors@toyotaclub.org
This is just another step in the evolution of our club & we hope that it will help us reach a wider audience. With the change in format from paper media to online with our improved website and forum, TORC will no longer require membership fees because of the reduced cost of publishing and maintaining such media. The benefits to existing members are numerous. Eventually we will have an archive of past newsletters. And we have already seen the results of our improved forum. All this & more will be available to everyone. Our new web master has been diligently working on our new website and forum and we are sure you will be happy with our new look.
Old School vs New School
One other issue that has come up recently has been the inclusion of newer Toyotas & the extended family of Scion & Lexus. Some people like it, others don't. While we feel this is what TORC is all about (it is part of our creed: ... promote and encourage an appreciation of Toyota, it's heritage, and it's future), we also agree that we need to get back to our roots (...the club's main goal is to promote the preservation & use of older Toyotas) & concentrate on what brought us all here in the first place - a love for the old classic Toyota cars of yesterday! While Toyotafest will continue to be a gathering for all models of Toyota, including Lexus & Scion, we will begin making plans to have more events for pre-1985 Toyota cars only! So let's look forward to our future, and let us all work together to make TORC the best Toyota club in the world!
Sincerely,
The Staff of TORC
Stuart Resor, Founder & owner of a 1967 Corona - I've always like Toyotas and have owned nine of them. I believe it was time for Toyotas to join the ranks of the collectibles, so in 1995 I started the Toyota Owners and Restorers Club (TORC).
