A very sad day has come as the decision to sell our beloved Stout’s has arrived. Unfortunately, lack of time & finances will not allow me to get one of these back on the road. Both are 1975 RK101J models compliance plated within a couple of months of each other.
The one with the bullbar & rego plates was purchased in 1998 and has been a daily drive, including several trips to Sydney (98-04), up till March this year. The 13 years saw the odometer go round three times on a fresh 5R fitted just before we bought it. The little donk drops oil on the ground but doesn’t blow smoke.
The original gearbox got really noisy in 1999 so a column shift 5-speed from a ToyoAce was fitted. This required new gearbox mounts to be created and a shortened rebalanced driveshaft.….. 1 – 4 ratios are the same as original with the fifth as an overdrive which allows 100km/h cruising at relaxed RPMs. Extractors (now cracked at the collector) & a horrible Holley 180 were also fitted soon after as the original manifold/exhaust cooked the newly located clutch slave cylinder and the original carb was leaking like a sieve. Fifth gear in this box shat itself in 2006 (about 50000km ago) so the whole box was reconditioned. In 2005, king pins along with a master cylinder, shoes & all wheel cylinders were revitalised. The propeller style hand brake has been the same since we bought it…. close to useless even with the new box. The original 6.186:1 diff is in place. A new radiator was fitted maybe about 4 years ago and a new distributor was fitted in 2008 (15000km ago). I am not a mechanic so most of above work & maintenance was performed by Nev Dowling Autos. The gearbox was reconditioned by Brisbane Gearbox Exchange. It is fitted with 7 x 15” rims with 31/10.5 tyres.
The cab on this Stout has extensive rust under the dash, the roof gutter is on the way out, the couple of holes in the roof are a talking point and the hole in the guard is superficially not getting any smaller. Strangely enough, the floor seems to be original and in good nick the last time I looked. Upholstery is in need of full restoration.
The sides of the tray are pretty straight and close well, but the tray needs a new floor and some steel framing is rusting and will need replacing. There is a rear ladder rack leaning on a tree beside the utes.
The other Stout, without the bullbar, was purchased on eBay last year for $1600. It appears, as advertised, to have no rust holes (or even close to it) anywhere. The roof has some dents in it and the paint is disappearing in some areas exposing some surface rust. The engine works as does the gearbox having driven it around an empty ¼ acre block. The brakes work if you pump them rapidly. The drive train seems to be original as does the engine down to the air filter with the exception of a set of extractors. The vehicle was purchased from an old farmer who had had it since new and has 94989 supposedly genuine kilometres. He used it to transport his vegies to the markets while the last 15 years saw it used on the farm only. It is fitted with 15” split rims. The tray is not pretty or flash whilst the interior needs a full resto.
That’s about all I know about this one although it has sat in our yard for almost a year deteriorating and that’s killing me.
We want to sell these as a package deal that comes with a mixture of spare parts (including some Lite Stout stuff) and….. wait for it…... a styleside Stout ute tray. The tray has been fitted to a trailer that was specially built for the tray so it should bolt straight back onto a Stout easily after some rust holes have been repaired and the original corrugated type steel floor has been replaced as it’s shot. The trailer rolling frame is not included in this package, just the Stout tray and the guards etc on the back and the rear black ladder rack seen leaning on the shed.
What all this worth? To me, it’s priceless as it’s full of many journeys and many more memories but to my beloved, the realistic one, offers over $3000 would suffice. Our gorgeous old Stouts are located with us at Mt Alford which is 15kms from Boonah & about 55km from Ipswich in south east Qld.
Although I’ve perused ToyMods many times, I feel guilty for this being my first post but never fear… the new daily drive is an ’88 Hilux 2WD petrol dual cab with a genuine 576,234kms!
Enjoy your Toyotas and thank you for reading this short novel
