I recently picked up a '79 Cressida from San diego and drove it home to Albuquerque, NM. The trip was uneventful as the car is in great shape. The performance however was pretty sad. Trucks were passing me on hills! Got it home and found a few vacuum lines to reconnect. That helped. All filters were new(ish). Checked the timing and it is at least 10-12 degrees advanced from where the book says it should be (8 degrees.) I've heard of timing chain issues. I've improved the highway mileage from about 13 to a bit over 15 MPG and the performance is "better." Any ideas? I seem to have NO extra power above 3600 RPM. The kickdown to passing gear is meaningless. Higher revs do not mean more power or speed. Trans is fine (repaired the overdrive solenoid) Starts and runs well. New plugs and wires. Any input would be welcome. Attachments:

UPDATE: I removed the catalytic converter yesterday. The engine revs without issue to 5500+ rpm on open pipes. The converter was extremely carbon encrusted. I will be replacing the cat as soon as I get it in from O'Reilly auto parts here in Albuquerque and will post the outcome which I expect to be favorable.

As I suspected, the issue was a loaded catalytic converter and muffler. They were changed saturday and what a difference. The specs say the Cressie has 113 HP and (without a dyno test) I believe it's just about there. Fuel Mileage still isn't anything to brag about ( getting 16 MPG highway or city.) New struts and shocks coming soon and tires probably after the first of the year.
