Hi, all! Just wanted to show you some pictures about my project. The car has been buried into garage for a while, because of my home improvement projects, but now I took it under work again. A couple of years ago I started the restoration by ripping off the rear axle and front suspension. They were sand blasted and painted, all the nuts and bolts renewed in addition to several other parts. Pictures of that phase are here. A week ago, I decided to rip off the engine and start the engine (and engine bay) restoration. I already have most of the decals reproduced or bought new ones, so the next step was to clean the engine, paint all the parts and fix the rust holes. But, I promised you the pictures: Removed the air conditioning Removed the cooler (please correct me if these terms are incorrect, thanks) Starting to rip off the engine Got a big lifter ready Raised the front tires to allow the gear box to drop downwards All clear, ready to be lifted off! That's it! Dirty as h*ll Old rust repairs in the engine bay. Lousy job. Washed for the first time Looks almost restored already! Oops, dropped something! Starting to look empty... Doesn't look bad at all I was surprised of how clean the engine was inside No wonder why the engine was leaking oil... Ripped off the rest of the extra parts, washed again and almost ready for painting the block. So, this is where I am right now. The radiator looks rusty, the air condition cooler looks rusty, the fuel tank looks rusty... This is so frustrating. I'm running out of money, so I cannot do everything right now. I need to concentrate on the engine and leave the body for the later times. Please, feel free to send me any comments or suggestions! And hey, if anyone knows where to get a new radiator and AC cooler and a fuel tank, please let me know. Shipping from the U.S. is not a problem.

Wow, what seal was that, rear main? I'm in the same boat on a few of my projects, engine bay and everything mechanical are spotless, but the bodies need work. Good progress so far.

Thanks! The next thing is to move the car to a nice, warm warehouse for the winter and restore the engine and the gearbox during the winter. The engine has been taken to pieces, some parts have already been cleaned and the next big thing is to paint the block. I just need to get "rid" of the frame first, since my garage is too small for both the car and the engine I'll show you more pictures when I next time take some.

Today I was working with the hood. It's not bad, but the front of the hood is rusty. Also, the noise isolation material inside the hood is gone (does anybody have one for sale, in my local dealer they want more than $800). The first thing was to remove everything that could be removed easily. This means the paintwork and all the rust that could be removed by normal tools, like steel brushes. Here's the hood after the brushing: I decided to take the engine shock cover at the same time under work. It's very thin plate and cannot be sand blasted. Luckily, I have another - and a very tender - way to remove the rust: lemon acid! I wonder if you are using that in the U.S.? Great stuff! I built a small "pool" for the hood and dropped the hood there. Then just added the lemon acid podwer and some hot water. If you look closely, you can see some bubbles coming from the fluid. This is because the lemon acid removes the rust. Let's get back to this during the weekend. I'll show what happened to the hood. For bigger images, please visit my gallery. Thanks for looking, please feel free to give me any comments and suggestions.

Let's get back to this during the weekend. Uh, I was bullshitting you. The "weekend" is now... The experiment was successful! Copletely rust-free and without damaging the thin plate parts. The part now must be cleaned of oil and old paint and just repainted. That's it! The next thing is to remove the seats and floor mat and take the body to the rust-fixer. My friend is a professional and I think I'm so drippy doing the welding so I better let the better guys do the job. I'll get back to this when I have something to show you.

I enjoy the pics of your project. I like the lemon acid idea. Will have to check to see if that is available here. Trying to soak up all 'tricks' to restoration.

Hey Mika! Thanks for sharing your Sept Gallery! It looks like your car is going down the assembly line at the Toyota plant. All we need are brand new parts straight out of the parts bin. I know from experience that a lot of my parts and all of my sheet metal have gone discontinued. I do every now and then find stuff on PartVoice.com
Keep the pictures coming! It is nice seeing a RT134 being restored to its former glory.

Today I tried to restore the exhaust manifold. Took a light sand blasting and painted it with VHT special paint which looks like newly made cast iron - nice! I also painted the other side of the outer shield of the exhaust manifold. However, there's one need: Does anyone know wher could I have a new pipe which comes from air pump (or somewhere near there) to the exhaust manifold? I was stupid and cut it when removing the manifold and now I need a replacement. I have a friend in the U.S. so it's possible that you send it to him, not overseas. The pipe can be seen in this picture (on top of the manifold). If you can help, please email me. Thanks! I also took the intake manifold into pieces. I'll take it to my friend for him to blast it just like the valve cover. It should look like a new after that. I have also reserved a trailer for next sunday. I'll take the body to my friend, he'll do all the welding jobs for me. Sorry, no pictures today. Let's get back to this project later. Thank you all for reading!

Mika, That is your air injection tube. I know for a fact that the gaskets are available, but the tube itself is probably discontinued. Maybe Mike F can take a look in the EPC and check Dealer Daily if there is stock somewhere in the US.
Keep up the good work! Rick

Actually the tube does not need to be new. I know some of you might have changed to a better manifold and this tube might have been removed? I could use that.

find stuff on PartVoice.com Rick, please tell me more about this? What is this service? (partSvoice.com?) PartsVoice is a parts locator service. Basically, the way it works is: 1) dealerships sign up for the service and have their inventory on file with Parts Voice 2) you, the customer have a part number and want to locate it (I think you have to register to use the site services). 3) you enter the part number into Parts Voice and see the results - then you can call the various dealers to make sure they still have it and buy it from them. ;D

Rick I checked the EPC and Dealer Daily, and the tube is still available but is expensive - about $120.00 new, from a dealer. Part number is 17360-38020

Woops, that's expensive! This only forces me to get a used one ;D I also had broken one vacuum part from the intake manifold. It is available, but costs 102EUR (~150 USD) I think I'll buy a bottle of glue. Thanks, guys! edit: I was jus thinking... Is there a way to fix the pipe so, that it looks original? I mean some kind of connection hose (spreader pipe?) between the two parts of the original tube. I mean, no one here in Finland has even seen the 20R engine before and no one can tell if the connection hose in the tube is original or not.

Mika, I'll help you with this, but first I'll need a closer and clearer picture of where you cut the air injection tube. Also snap a photo of the connection hose that you have mentioned.
I'll look in my 1982 Toyota Pickup factory shop manual to see if there are some good up close pictures. If there is, then I'll copy them for you and send them to Timo.

Thanks for posting a pictures of the timing chain tensioner and its L & R side dampers (DSC_7725). I just ordered these parts before they become discontinued.
Regarding that broken vacuum piece, it is the Bimetal Valve Assy. One of my "trees" were broken off by a careless person I trusted to work on my truck. I had to replace mine, but I don't remember it being so expensive. All Toyota dealers have different prices. I just did a search on Parts Voice and there are 35 in participating dealer's inventories. These dealers on Part Voice tend to want to discount these NOS parts, so you might get a good price for one. Speaking of which, there is (1) showing stock @ Cabe Toyota. I'm calling Mike F in the morning, so I'll also inquire about this part for you and a price.
Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see this RT134 all back together.

Regarding that broken vacuum piece, it is the Bimetal Valve Assy. I just found out that the same part has been used in many vehicles and there are plenty of used ones available - even here in Finland.

The october gallery. It's really starting to feel great now, finally some beautiful parts that I can just bolt on back to their places! In this phase I must send very special thanks to Rick, Carlyn & Mike for helping me with the decals. I wish this picture is a kind of payback to you. (click for larger image) Rick may have some mail in a couple weeks. All of these still have not been printed, but I'm working with these again. My friend has been sick but now he's back in business again.

Hey Mika, That is a very nice looking power steering reservoir you have there. I remember when mine looked like that back in 1981. The caution plates look great! Too bad the original plate on the top is discontinued, but the updated version looks just as good.
You are like me...pays attention to detail.
Thank You in advance for the caution plates that you are going to send me.
Keep up the good work and can't wait to see your RT134 back together.

Tried to disassemble the distributor today. No wonder the engine hasn't responded to pedal, since the distributor was so dirty and all the moving parts were stuck. Now it has been repaired. I still need to call my local dealer and ask for the new vacuum advancers. If I saw it right, the part number should be 19220-38210. Hope it's not expensive, that's a must have -part.
I was so busy cleaning parts and washing the distributor that I didn't even take pictures. Try to take them next time.
How can I wipe this smile out my face? Every time I go to the garage and see the rebuilt engine I start smiling and it won't stop for hours ;D

Long time, no see ;D I've screwed up. The Corona crank pulley was badly rusted and I decided to dunk it in the lemon acid. This was a mistake The pulley is some kind of cast metal and it seems to suck all the acid like a sponge. Because of this, the corrosion does not stop at all and at the moment the pulley has become very fragile. If I use a steel brush, the pulley changes into dust. The pulley is not too rare part to have, but a very expensive one. Finally I managed to have those VHT paints I wanted and now I have started painting e.g. the oil pan, other pulleys/rollers and all the other black engine parts. I've also tried to gather together all the rest of the parts to be recoated with that yellow zinc (?). I also rebuilt the air pump and the next things are starter, alternator and some other smaller parts. Next spring there's a show here in Finland, called "Classic Motorshow". They wanted my engine (and perhaps the Corona body) there as a decoration. Actually, there really might be something to see, since the 20R engine has never officially been imported here in Finland. Let's see if I can get the car there. The idea of the decoration was to present an unfinished restoration project. I still haven't received the envelope from Rick and because of that I haven't even called the guy who makes the decals for me. I'll upload some pictures when I stop feeling this lazy ;D
