Hi all, i have a 67 corona that is in need of an engine, could anyone advise me on what i could use as an easy replacement for the 3rc motor, i would also like to retain the transmission unless you feel that it would limit my choice of engines. thanks.

What is your goal in an engine replacement rather than rebuilding the stock 3RB/3RC? -More power? -A newer type engine? Perhaps the simplest 'new' engine would be an 18RC engine (used about 1972 to 1974) but you would still have to find an engine and all the required parts to make it work. I have seen 18RC, 20R, and 18RG engines in these Coronas, and I have heard of rotary engines and 6 cylinder Ford Capri engines being used.
Dollar wise, fixing the old engine might be cheapest in the long run, should you decide to keep the car stock.

Hi Carlyn, thanks for the reply. My reason for wanting to change the motor is mainly borne out of frustration. The 3rc that is currently in it has been totally rebuilt recently, due to a rod bearing seizure, the reason for the failure was not apparent and the oil pump has been ruled out as the culprit. So anyway the rebuilt engine is now back in the car and there is an obvious sound of a bearing hammering away. As you can appreciate i'm pretty disappointed. My guess is that an oil-way is probably blocked. I am at the point that i do'nt want to throw more money into this motor. thanks .

Eric: I can remember rebuilding an engine many years ago that turned out to have two problems that I decided that I did not want to try to fix. So I got another engine core ready and rebuilt that (the second was much better) and scrapped the first block which had the two problems. If you want the car to remain close to stock (it might make it easier to sell should that day come), I suggest that you find an engine core and start over (or repair the engine you have-maybe a crank kit & gasket kit is all you need if you have already installed new pistons, etc.). Again thanks Carlyn, i'm going to give this engine one more shot. I guess after all the $$$ i have put into it i should'nt give up so easily. After i have it stripped back down i will get in contact with you for more parts. I am so looking forward to the day i can actually drive this car, it is in stunning condition, and has only logged 79000 miles. I think i would be hard pressed to find a nicer unmolested example, when i get a chance i will try to post some pic's for your approval....

one engine that would work is the 1980 to 1982 corolla 1.8, i'm getting ready to do the trade out, it is said to fit perfectly but don't know if you need the tranny, i think you will. here a motor in Calif would cost you 210.00 out the door and 135.00 for the trans, at any "pick your part" used that is. long block (with everything on it, air comp, alter, just put gas and start it, just pick the best one out of the bunch and pull it out, etc.) only thing with this is it will not be original, me i don't care, can't find any parts for it anyway, dealers are all out, with new engine then i could keep it running for another 10 years, i did make mine a isc brake in the front, it got them from a 1970 corona, fit perfect, rotor and the bracket that holds it only need to be changed, the other thing that you may need to change is the master brke cly, i think you may need it, haven't done that yet, but are looking to get the one from the 80 corolla looks like it will work, will let you know soon.

If you're certain it's a clogged oil way, couldn't you run a high percentage of solvent in the oil for a short period to try and dislodge or desolve it. I don't mean drive this car around but in the garage under controlled conditions.

Sorry i did'nt get back earlier with an update. Anyhow Carlyn supplied me with a new crank and bearings, problem solved. Seems there was a machining issue, and the machine shop very kindly re-imbursed all costs to me. The engine now is basically new. Car is running like a dream. 3000 miles since getting it back together and not a problem so far. I guess i'd better do another oil change this week. Carlyn, thanks for your help and speedy service with the crank, and all the parts you supplied for the original build up last year, or was it the year before? This thing has been a long time in the making
