Hello, my name is Tomás now that I am a USA expat living in Colombia, South America. I'm about to go see a 1981 Corolla TE71 with the purpose of inspecting it for purchase. As best as I can tell, it is the three door hatchback, but I've seen so many different names for this model. From what I can tell the TE71 designation is used for many different Corolla models. The car was originally sold in Colombia. The current owner swapped out the 4K (1.3L) four speed for a 3TC (1.8L) with T50 trans. He kind of stopped there with a bit more work to do on the conversion. I'm guessing the suspension and brakes will be the next thing to bring up to snuff.
After doing some reading, I've found lots of references to E70, E71, TE71, TE72 and more. I'm not sure why there are so many designations. Are they all the same basic Corolla? I see aftermarket suspension parts for a (T)E72, but I can't find information as to if they are compatible with the 1981 TE71.
Any suggestions on what are common problems on this model to check for when I make my inspection?
Thanks, Tomás
